Compare two revisions

When a new draft arrives, compare it against an earlier one to see exactly what changed. SceneItAll shows the two revisions side by side or scene by scene, highlighting added, removed, and changed scenes. This article covers entering compare mode, reading the diff, and switching views.

Before you start

  • The episode has at least two revisions of the script. With only one revision, compare mode is unavailable and the menu entry is disabled with the hint “Needs two or more revisions to compare.”
  • A project, episode, and revision are selected in the top bar.

Enter compare mode

The revision you currently have open becomes the left side of the comparison.

  1. In the script viewer control panel, open View (the Preview options menu).
  2. Choose Compare revisions. The viewer switches to compare mode.
  3. In the compare header, open the right-hand version selector (it reads Select a version to compare against) and pick the revision to compare with.

To compare two specific revisions — say V3 against V5 — first switch to V3 in the Revision selector, then enter compare mode and pick V5 on the right.

What you can compare

  • The right-hand list offers every other active revision for the episode, newest first.
  • You cannot compare a revision to itself — it never appears in the right-hand list, and the comparison is rejected if the same revision is sent twice.
  • Archived revisions are not listed. Restore one first to diff it (see Manage script revisions).

Choose a compare view

The compare header has a segmented control that toggles between two views:

Full script

Both revisions render as continuous scrollable text with the differences highlighted inline. The comparison uses the same screenplay font and zoom level as the normal script viewer, including inside highlighted changed text. Each side is tinted with the color of its revision so you can tell them apart. Select Show changes only to hide unchanged content and focus on what differs.

Scene view

A list of scenes from both revisions. Each row shows the scene number, the Set and INT/EXT, the time of day, and the page length. Added scenes appear with a green-tinted background. Select a scene row to expand it and read the detailed content differences using the same screenplay typography as the viewer.

Exit compare mode

Select Close revisions in the compare header (or Close on narrow screens) to return to the normal script viewer.
