Renumber Characters
Character numbers are canonical and flow downstream to assigned Cast. Use Renumber Cast on the Cast List to atomically assign project-unique Character numbers to linked Cast members.
Prerequisites
- A project with cast members.
- Renumbering needs the admin role or higher.
Open the dialog
- On the Cast List tab, select Renumber Cast in the toolbar.
- The dialog opens with three settings.
- Before you apply, the dialog shows how many unlinked or locked Cast members will be skipped.
Settings
Start at
The number to begin from. Default is 1. Must be at least 1.
Step
The increment between consecutive numbers. Default is 1. Must be at least 1. With Start at 1 and Step 1, cast members are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4. With Start at 100 and Step 10, they are numbered 100, 110, 120, 130.
Order by
How cast members are sorted before numbering:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Current Order | Keeps the existing cast-list order. |
| Alphabetical | Sorts by name (A–Z) before numbering. |
| By Scene Count | Sorts by number of scenes, most to fewest, before numbering. |
Apply
- Set your Start at, Step, and Order by. Both fields accept whole numbers only.
- Select Renumber.
- A toast confirms: “Renumbered N cast member(s).”
The Character records are updated first, and their assigned Cast rows refresh immediately with the same numbers.
What renumbering skips and updates
- Unlinked Cast is skipped. A Cast member without exactly one linked Character stays unchanged. The dialog shows the skipped count before you apply.
- Locked numbers are skipped. Any Cast member whose number you locked (via Lock Cast # on the row menu) keeps their number. The dialog shows the skipped count, and the sequence works around occupied locked numbers.
- Characters are updated first. The operation assigns each eligible Character its new project-unique number, then refreshes the linked Cast copy. See View and manage the cast list for how Character and Cast numbers relate.
Tips
- By Scene Count is useful when you want principal cast (who appear in the most scenes) to have the lowest numbers.
- Use a Step of 10 if you expect to add cast later and want room to insert numbers between existing ones.
